What system settings do I need to make when using the BMW Motorrad Connected app on a smartphone with an Android operating system?

In principle, the following settings should be ensured:

  • Access to the smartphone location for BMW Motorrad Connected must be set to ALWAYS
  • Energy optimization for BMW Motorrad Connected should be deactivated
  • BMW Motorrad Connected must also be allowed to receive / send data in the background


Explanation / background:
In order for BMW Motorrad Connected to function properly, it requires authorization to theoretically access the location of your smartphone at any time. The purpose of this authorization is to ensure that the app functions even if your smartphone is in your jacket pocket while riding, for example, and the app is running in the background. Navigation, route recording and Speed Limit Info (SLI) are based on the GPS location of your smartphone.

For BMW Motorrad, the privacy of users is a top priority. Location data will only be used for the purposes listed in the data protection agreement.

Energy optimization options from different smartphone manufacturers can cause the BMW Motorrad app to be stopped when it is running in the background (e.g. if your smartphone is in your jacket pocket while riding) or is being closed. In such a case, a proper function of navigation, route recording and Speed Limit Info (SLI) cannot be ensured.
